DADDY THURSDAYS

Winters are tough in the midwest. The days are short and the sunshine is scarce, so we often have to make the most of our time. Most days Alex works late and the kids and I grind out homeschool, chores and indoor activities. Usually, the kids are in bed by the time Alex gets home from work and I catch him up on everything that happened that day. This is pretty much our normal schedule, with the exception of Thursday nights. We call Thursday’s “Daddy’s Thursday.” The kids stay up past their bedtime and we all enjoy a warm cup of milk and read all the books together. On Thursdays, we all wake up a bit happier and get super excited when the clock strikes 7 pm.

Emory and I warm up a pot of milk, Haddon grabs the marshmallows and Grace pulls out the comfy blankets. We all cozy up by the fireplace, drink our warm milk and get a chance to hang out with dad. Setting Thursday nights apart is something that we started doing after we moved away from our family two years ago. We wanted to feel like we were bending the rules and giving the kids an extra dose of fun for the day. This is a tradition for our family and it’s one that we hold dear. Sometimes the kids will perform songs that they have been practicing or tell funny jokes for all of us to enjoy. It’s turned out to be one of my favorite traditions and I know I’ll remember it for years to come.
