DIY POLKA DOT GARLAND

IMG_3894

grace’s room is constantly changing. as she grows and reaches new heights i constantly have to adjust the deco and the flow of her space to fit her growing interests and arms! i’ve been wanting to add some color to her walls without resorting to paint (considering we’re renting and will have to repaint our living room and kitchen…which are painted dark grey…before we move out). a few weeks ago I was inspired by this pin on pinterest to add a pop of color to grace’s wall and it turned out so much better than expected. win!! she loves the way the polkadots move every time she “blows” on them and wakes up pointing at it saying oook! (it means look in her language)

it was a fairly easy project to do and halfway through it i realized that i should take pictures and blog about it.

you’ll need:

  • different color scrap book paper
  • sizzors
  • rounded object to draw circles (i used a mug)
  • fishing wire
  • Tape
  • 1×1 wooden stick- this i got from my dad
  • two crews and two anchors
  • double sided tape

i started off by picking out colored scrap book paper that i thought complemented her bedroom theme (which is a bit more whimsical than i originally intended it to be) and used the bottom of a coffee cup to draw out circles. i then cut out the circles and arranged them in a pattern that i felt happy with. i tried to make sure it wasn’t too long vertically because i was afraid she would pull on the garland and bring it down… screws and everything (she’s pretty strong!) i also made sure to cut out enough circles where they can be back to back on each other so when the garland moves around the color paper will show on both sides.

this is the time consuming part… after arranging them on the floor i tied the fishing wire to the wooden stick and ran it along the length (vertically) of each column. i then used double sided tape on the back of each circle and sandwiched the fishing wire between the two pressing tightly to make sure it really stuck. (i should’ve taken a picture… sorry)

“sandwich” each tape to the circles individually to keep track of the pattern. i also deviated from the original pattern and spread the circles out unevenly because i wanted a less “formal” look.

when i was done i checked the length and the overall look of it. then i hung it up over her crib using two anchors, a leveler and screws… voilà!

i’m contemplating on whether i want to paint the wooden part or not. i like the character the raw wood adds to the room. we’ll see… maybe ill change it again.

p.s: i had intentions of posting this a while back but didn’t get around to it. grace is a lot bigger now!
