MUSIC EDUCATION AND OUR FAMILY ROCK BAND.

When I was a little girl, I attended an elementary school that emphasized the arts.  I wanted so badly to be a ballerina, but my parents insisted I learned to play an instrument, so I chose the flute.  They thought that I would benefit from the discipline and dedication that it takes to learn a skill and they were right! I loved it.  I slowly learned my scales, worked on my tone and as time progressed, I learned to play my way through some the classic compositions. I was a member of a city symphony orchestra, traveled with my school bands and was offered a scholarship to pursue music education.  Learning how to play an instrument opened my eyes to an amazing world.  A world full of color, emotion, passion.  It taught me a new language and instilled a dedication in me that has shaped who I am today. So, last week, when Guitar Center reached out to me to share the benefits of music education, I jumped at the opportunity!

I am a huge believer in music education because of what it has done for me and what it’s doing for my own kids.  Through music, I have been able to share different cultures with our kids, help create discipline and have given them an outlet for self-expression.

Last week we visited our local Guitar Center, where we had a chance to play a few of the instruments, spend some quality time and live out our dreams of rocking out together! We also had the opportunity to use one of their practice rooms, where we all took turns at playing the drum set (Thank God for soundproofing!) At one point Grace asked if we could buy her a drum set so we could rock on at home.  We absolutely support music education, however, we may have her pick a quieter instrument.

Not only did we spend hours at our local Guitar Center playing with the instruments, but we have also signed up for music lessons and I wanted to share with you their Five Key Differentiators:

  • Their Curriculum – They have created custom curriculum focusing on teaching theory through contemporary music.  Their curriculum is approved by the National Association for Music Education, the world’s largest arts education organization. They also tailor their curriculum to our specific goals and interests.
  • The Convenience –  They are everywhere! There are currently over 200 locations nationally. They are a one-stop-shop for music lessons, retail instruments, instrument repairs, and supplemental learning materials as well as online learning and the ability to schedule at any location.
  • Pro Instructors with a Passion for Music – They have amazing instructors that are passionate, playing musicians and are paired based on our specific need.
  • Contemporary Instrumentation – They offer a large variety of instruments to chose from and they make sure that their students have the musical foundation to achieve any level or expertise on any instrument.
  • Achievement Program – They help students monitor their progress with a 6 tiered program.

We are looking forward to many more visits at Guitar Center this upcoming winter. The kids are already asking us to visit and Grace is so excited about starting guitar lessons.

I completely agree with you. I feel like music is almost as integral to learning as language. It’s how your soul expresses itself. If you are acquainted with more diversity, it’ll open your mind to grasping other perspectives.
