weekend project: herb garden

spring breaking it up over here peeps!! ale and i had this week off together and we have been on family adventure overload… although i am enjoying every bit of it, there are way too many pictures to edit.  not complaining… just behind a bit.20140308-211417.jpglast weekend ale and i decided to start up an herb garden at his parents house.  we’ve talked about one day having a garden of our own where we can grow fruits and veggies and maybe have a chicken coop and have fresh eggs in the mornings. as much as my heart longs to live off the land, we live in an apartment and i’m pretty sure there’s something in our lease about chickens.  ale’s parents have a wonderful space behind their home with mango and avocado trees AND they were kind enough to let us use a bit of space to start our herb garden.

how we did it:

we stopped by home depot and picked up basil, thyme, and parsley bonnie starter plants that came in biodegradable pots as well as organic arugula seeds.  we also “borrowed” some mint from my dad’s herb garden. we measured a 8ft x 2ft area and bought 1×5 wood planks for boarders which we held together with ____ screws.

we placed a mesh to keep out weeds and used a left over plank to use as a boundary for the mint (mint is vicious and it doesn’t play nice with other plants) we also filled the box with 2 bags of organic garden soil.herb garden PM edits 3

^^seriously how cute is this little gardener???^^herb garden PM edits 4^^with a little help, we planted the herbs about 10 inches apart from each other and planted the arugula seedlings in little biodegradable pots. (we’re pretty sure they’re supposed to grow in the pots and then transferred to the soil…but hey… they’re doing just fine).  as far as our little gardener is concerned… she was elbows deep in dirt and we’re pretty sure she ate a good handful of it… but it’s all good.  it’s organic! right?^^

IMG_7755^^so far the garden is doing great and these two just melt my heart!!  we’ll also be expanding soon.  ale’s mom wants us to extend the garden along the fence and add tomatoes and other veggies… can’t wait!!!^^

for now we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed!!!

anyone out there have herb gardens?? how do you tend to them? anyone in apartments with gardens?  i have a BLACK thumb and kill just about everything but i have high hopes for this one.. phew… how’s that for a how-to on gardening??
