Most of the furniture in our home are pieces that we’ve collected throughout our marriage. Our couch, bed and dining room table were the first “grown up” pieces we purchased from an actual furniture store. Other than that, we’ve collected different things here and there from home goods and target, as well as donations from generous friends. During our move, my parents offered us their bedroom armoire. I didn’t have a place for it, but it was a really sturdy wooden wardrobe with great height and lots of personality. The downside was the red-wooden color, the doors (which made it look really bulky), and the knobs, which were a little antiquated. So… we worked on a DIY furniture update.
here’s a before picture from our instagram
I’ve read about chalk paint and how easy it is to use on furniture because it eliminates the tedious task of sanding. We actually used this black chalkboard paint because it was fairly inexpensive and I thought that if it didn’t work then I’d buy the expensive stuff and try again.
We removed the doors, painted the entire piece chalkboard black… except for the middle shelf because I knew it would get most use and I didn’t want the paint to chip so quick. We added an Ikea under cabinet wine glass holder (similar to this one) and changed the existing knobs to thick leather DIY knobs…voilà!!
It’s now turned into our entertaining bar/ dining room supply holder furniture piece and we could not be happier about it!
My favorite part about the piece are the knobs… I’ll post a DIY on them soon. They’re super easy and they look amazing! Also, all of the glass against the matte black give it a sophisticated look that our dining room was in need of.
Looks brand new! Nice job
