As the school year comes to an end and summer plans start to take over our schedule, I like to have a plan to help my kids avoid learning gaps that usually happen as soon as we close up our books. It doesn’t have to be complicated or even look like a regular school day, but I’ve found that having a few intentional learning points is so beneficial to closing the learning gap and keeping our kiddos engaged and ready for another school year.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR KIDS ENGAGED THIS SUMMER:
Encourage reading – we encourage our children to read every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. We also visit the library together to pick out recreational books that they find interesting.
Incorporate educational games and activities into their daily routine to keep their minds active and engaged – we love board games that require reading or some sort of math.
Practice math skills – incorporate math into everyday activities such as cooking, grocery shopping, or playing games. My kids love cooking so this is something we do all the time!
Enroll in summer programs – check with local schools or community centers for summer programs that focus on subjects your child struggles with or is interested in. This doesn’t just have to be education-focused, but a fun summer science or a church VBS keeps my kiddos engaged in reading!
Set aside time for learning – schedule a specific time each day for your child to work on learning activities, such as reading, writing, or practicing math skills. Sometimes keeping a short routine helps avoid learning gaps throughout the summer!
Happy Summer friends!!!!
