i never had a chance to set up a formal nursery while we were pregnant. when our little lady was born i was in my second semester of nursing school starting the balancing act of being a mom and a full-time student. we lived in a small one bedroom apartment and my idea of “nesting” including shoving all of our baby shower gifts into a 4×4 closet. we did not have a chance to decorate much (if any) and very practically placed her crib in one corner of the room and our bed in the other. although we were very minimalist in our living, we just did not fit in a one bedroom apartment and the best choice for us was to make the move (we had avalanches of clothes and baby bottles on a daily basis). our current apartment brought with it a spacious second bedroom which became our little lady’s nursery and allowed for plenty of room for a growing toddler and extra storage!
because we are leasing, at the end of every year we are faced with having to make a decision about staying, moving, buying, downsizing etc. we are at the end of our current lease and are about 90% sure that we’ll be making a move pretty soon. although i am very excited about the new apartments we’re looking at, i have been thrown into a emotional roller coaster. we have already built so many memories in this apartment. grace’s first steps, first words and first time sleeping through the night…alleluia!
regardless of where our next move will take us, this apartment will always have a special place in our hearts and to bid it farewell we wanted to document our little lady’s current and first official nursery. i’m sure when she’s older she’ll thank us for doing this.
^^ we try to stick to a minimalist mentality which works very well for us (given that hoarding runs in my blood) and we often go for clean and open spaces that allow for more “living” and less clutter. ^^
^^yes… those are rats… and our little lady loves them. we have named them Rosita and Ronaldo the rats. the pillow was made by my dear friend annie who has a linen shop on Etsy called Lin’n Works. she makes amazing pillows and holiday crafts… check her out!!! ^^^^i made this garland as soon as we moved in. it was my first DIY project and we all just love it! here’s the how-to. it seems like it was just yesterday she was learning how to pull herself up on the rail of the crib and now she’s ready to tear the place down^^
^^oh greenery… it livens up any space! i have a black-thumb and kill all plants that enter our home… but i do love them! ^^
^^the furniture for the room is a hodgepodge of all of the things i have carried around with me in our previous apartments. these shelves hung in our living room in our last apartment and the basket stand was previously red and purchased at home-goods about 5 years ago^^
^^you can’t see it so well in this picture, but the crib rail has been chewed up compliments of a teething baby^^
^^this rocking chair/glider is one of my favorite spots in our home. this is where we read, pray, sing and rock till we fall asleep. It’s not the fanciest but its ours…and it’s beautiful. grace’s pop-pa (ale’s dad) bought it for us while we were pregnant and since then, it’s one of the most used pieces of furniture in our home. i reupholstered the stool a few years ago to give it more character. there are palm trees somewhere under the cover… yuk! ^^
so here’s to all of the memories in this little room. to all of the book readings, dance parties and bird watching we’ve done through that window.
i love all that you left the walls white. it makes everything else stand out so beautifully!
gorgeous work!! your girl is a beauty!

Love the simplicity and clean and fresh look of everything together, what a peaceful lil space for your beauty!!
i really love g’s room. so, so many nurseries are decorated with anything but the minimalist mentality… so many colors, patterns, so much stimulation. love the blank walls, creative hanging dots, splashes of green, and simple furniture. so inspirational! i am always trying to pare down our life – i am such a naturally cluttered person but i love feeling as if i need very little to thrive, and having room to breathe!
Aww, what a cute nursery! I love how you decorated it!

Kelly, Thanks friend. It’s one of those “make lemonade” kind of rooms. :0)

M,
thank you friend. i too like the idea of white walls and staying away from the “baby” colors. i think it’s important to have texture and patters and colors but the typical pink and baby blue drive me a bit crazy lol. as far as simplifying it’s a daily struggle. we’re in clutter-rehab and have to work on it every day. keep at it!

Emily,
Thank you! It’s a daily struggle to maintain it looking this way but it definitely helps having the “less is more” mentality.
I love your nursery. Especially the wall hanging!
