There’s something comforting about a pot of simmering tomato sauce filling the kitchen with that savory, cozy aroma. It’s one of those dinners that feels like home — simple ingredients, big flavor, and the kind of meal everyone gathers around the table for.
This simple ground beef and tomato sauce is one of my go-to weeknight recipes. It’s hearty, flavorful, and easy to make with pantry staples. You can serve it over pasta, spoon it onto rice, or use it as the filling for stuffed peppers or lasagna. However you serve it, it’s one of those dishes that makes everyone happy.

Simple Ground Beef & Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 (20 oz) can chopped tomatoes
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Olive oil or butter, for cooking
Instructions
- Sauté the onion
Heat a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat with a drizzle of olive oil (or a bit of butter).
Add the chopped onion and cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes soft and translucent. - Add the garlic
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant — don’t let it brown. - Brown the beef
Add the ground beef to the pan. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until fully browned. Drain any excess fat if needed. - Add tomato paste
Stir in the tomato paste and let it cook for about a minute to caramelize slightly — this deepens the flavor. - Season
Sprinkle in paprika, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. - Add chopped tomatoes
Pour in the canned chopped tomatoes (with their juices) and stir everything together. - Simmer
Lower the heat and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens and the flavors meld together. - Serve
Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve warm over pasta, rice, or however your family loves it most.

How to Make It Even Richer (Without Cream or Cheese)
If you want to take your sauce to the next level, here are a few of my favorite tricks:
- Caramelize the onions longer. Let them cook until golden for a sweeter, deeper base.
- Toast the tomato paste. Cook it until it darkens — it makes a huge difference in flavor.
- Deglaze the pan. Add a splash of broth, water, or red wine after browning the meat to lift all those flavorful bits.
- Add a touch of sweetness. A small pinch of sugar or a drizzle of balsamic vinegar balances the acidity of the tomatoes.
- Let it simmer longer. If you have time, let it cook for 30–40 minutes instead of 20 — the longer it simmers, the richer it gets.
- Finish with olive oil. Stir in a tablespoon of good-quality olive oil at the end for a silky, luxurious finish.
