Grace lost her first tooth exactly one year ago and it was such an exciting experience for all of us. I couldn’t believe my little girl was already starting a new chapter in her life and let me tell you, my mama heart was not ready for it. She now has three adult teeth that have really come into their own and we are honing down on her oral care. When I was younger, my mom taught us a song that we would sing while brushing our teeth. I remember brushing my front teeth up and down and my molars in a circular motion, but bless her heart we never really talked about flossing. Alex and I are huge believers in flossing and the benefits that it has on our overall oral care, but with four kids and a busy schedule, sometimes it’s difficult to keep up with the practice.

I was so excited to partner with Waterpik® to try the new Sonic-Fusion® flossing toothbrush and to introduce Grace to not just a trusted brand, but also a convenient device for us. Sonic-Fusion is the World’s First Flossing Toothbrush, which allows us to just use only one device for a complete clean. Sonic-Fusion is up to 2x as effective as regular brushing and flossing, removes up to 99.9% of plaque from treated areas, and is up to 50% more effective for improving gum health vs. string floss. I also love that it’s pretty simple to use. As the Sonic-Fusion toothbrush head cleans the tooth surfaces, the Water Flosser jet inside the brush head, targets plaque between the teeth and below the gum line all at the touch of a button.

I’m not sure how our conversation is going to go with our other three kids, but I’m glad that we are really paying attention to these details. Sometimes with big families it’s easy to miss tedious tasks like flossing so I wanted to share with you a few tips that have helped us reinforce this with Grace.

Start the conversation early – I am usually the one that brushes everybody’s teeth before bed. If I’m brushing their teeth I will make it a point to talk to them about “buggies” that begin to grow on their teeth if they don’t brush properly and floss their teeth. I also show them how I brush my teeth and then let them have a try at it.

Have the right tools- For the younger kiddos, I like to have a fluoride free toothpaste and a colorful toothbrush to get them excited. Once they’re old enough, I will switch over to the Sonic-Fusion and have them use it at a really low setting. The Sonic-Fusion has an advanced water pressure control and 10 settings for custom comfort and a 2-minute brushing timer with a 30 second pace, which will ensure that I am not rushing through brushing.

Make it part of a routine- My kids thrive with a routine and often do so much better when we make brushing an important part of our night routine. If they know they have to brush their teeth before bed, it’s no longer surprise, they just do it. I also believe that leading by example is a must when it comes to oral health. If they see me make it a priority, they’ll do it as well.

Grace has a few more loose teeth that should be falling out soon and she’s already requested cash from the tooth fairy. So, I’m thinking about starting a tooth fairy fund because things might get really pricey with four kids!
